On January 8–9, 2024, a transformative Scientific Writing Workshop was organized in Pokhara, bringing together bachelor's and master's students eager to enhance their academic writing skills. Hosted by the Gandaki Province Academy of Science and Technology (GPAST) and technically supported by the Center for Environmental and Sustainable Agricultural Research (CESAR), the event showcased experts' collaborative efforts to foster scientific excellence.
Representing CESAR, Dr. Santosh Koirala played a pivotal role in the workshop, facilitating
multiple sessions focused on the critical elements of scientific communication. His dynamic
and interactive approach resonated deeply with participants, making complex topics accessible and actionable.
Dr. Santosh Koirala's Highlights
Dr. Koirala's contributions were a cornerstone of the workshop. His session on Good Writing Skills introduced participants to the fundamentals of clarity, precision, and brevity in
scientific writing. Students actively engaged in a hands-on exercise titled "Practicing Cutting the Clutter," where they worked on eliminating redundancy to craft concise and impactful sentences.
Another standout session led by Dr. Koirala was on Designing Effective Figures and Charts, a crucial skill for presenting scientific data visually. He provided practical tips for creating visually appealing and informative figures, assigning participants to design charts. On the second day, he reviewed these assignments, offering constructive feedback to help students refine their designs.
In addition, Dr. Koirala conducted a tutorial on Zotero, a widely used reference management tool. Participants learned how to organize and manage citations efficiently, equipping them with a vital skill for academic research. His guidance ensured that attendees left with a comprehensive understanding of how to streamline their writing and referencing processes.
Insights from Other Experts
The workshop also benefited from the expertise of renowned facilitators. Dr. Shiva Devkota led sessions on the structure of scientific papers, crafting precise methods sections, and ethical considerations using AI tools like ChatGPT. Dr. Dhaka Ram Bhandari introduced the scope and importance of scientific writing, setting the tone for the workshop. Dr. Prayan Pokharel engaged participants in discussions on organizing results sections, structuring abstracts, and applying innovative techniques like the "And, But, Therefore" framework for simplifying complex ideas.
A Collaborative Success
This workshop exemplifies CESAR's commitment to advancing research capacity in the region. Through Dr. Koirala's impactful sessions, CESAR underscored its dedication to empowering young researchers with the skills needed to excel in academia and beyond. The event provided a platform for participants to engage with experts, refine their writing techniques, and gain confidence in communicating their research findings.
By fostering collaboration and skill-building, CESAR supports initiatives bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application. This workshop marks another milestone in CESAR's mission to promote sustainable research practices and scientific literacy among Nepal's aspiring researchers.
